Second Innings, Stronger Than Ever: V. Kumaraswamy’s PhD from MDI

At a stage in life when most professionals choose to slow down, V. Kumaraswamy chose to begin again.

Now in his late 60s, his journey stands as a compelling testament to reinvention, intellectual resilience, and an enduring commitment to growth. With an accomplished career spanning over 38 years in industry, Kumaraswamy built a strong legacy navigating the complex intersections of trade, business strategy, and policy. His professional path was defined by hands-on decision-making, sharp business acumen, and a deep engagement with the practical realities of economic systems.

Alongside his corporate career, he cultivated a distinct voice in public discourse. Since 1995, Kumaraswamy has been a regular contributor to leading business and economic publications, offering nuanced perspectives on policy, trade, and industry developments. His writing has consistently translated complex economic concepts into clear, accessible insights, bridging the gap between industry and a wider audience.

However, for Kumaraswamy, experience was never the final destination.

Following his retirement, he embarked on a new intellectual pursuit—enrolling in a PhD in Economics at MDI Gurgaon. This decision was not a shift away from his past, but rather an effort to deepen and formalise the knowledge he had accumulated over decades.

The transition from industry veteran to academic researcher demanded a significant shift in approach. Moving beyond intuition and experiential understanding, he embraced the rigours of academic inquiry—grounding ideas in theory, validating them through empirical analysis, and adopting structured research methodologies. This phase required both learning and unlearning, as familiar concepts were revisited through formal frameworks and long-held assumptions were tested with analytical precision.

Within the academic environment at MDI Gurgaon, Kumaraswamy engaged deeply with coursework, faculty mentorship, and peer discussions, steadily building a disciplined approach to research. His work in macroeconomics reflects a unique synthesis of practical insight and theoretical depth, aiming to bridge the divide between real-world economic behaviour and academic constructs.

In December 2025, he successfully completed his PhD—marking not just an academic milestone, but the culmination of a profound intellectual journey.

Kumaraswamy’s story underscores a powerful truth: that curiosity has no age limit, and the pursuit of knowledge remains boundless. His journey serves as an inspiring reminder that it is never too late to learn, evolve, and redefine success.
