Spotify has announced a new feature that will allow users to send direct messages (DMs) to each other within the app. The rollout begins this week in select markets, covering both free and premium subscribers. With this addition, Spotify aims to create a more social and engaging listening experience by letting users recommend and discuss music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly in the app.
Direct Messaging Available for Free and Premium Users
Starting this week, Spotify will begin introducing direct messaging for users aged 16 and above. Both free and premium subscribers will be able to access this feature on the Spotify app for iOS and Android devices.
At launch, the update will be limited to select countries, while its availability in India and other regions remains uncertain. The company has also not confirmed whether the feature will later extend to other platforms, such as Windows, macOS, or the PlayStation 5.
Sharing Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks
The new direct messages feature makes it easier for users to recommend audio content without relying on third-party platforms like WhatsApp or Instagram. From the Now Playing View, users can tap the share icon, choose a recipient, and send their recommendation.
Recipients will receive a message request, and once accepted, they can view, listen to, and respond to the shared content. Users can also react with text messages and emojis to make interactions more engaging.
More Ways to Connect with Friends and Family
Apart from sharing tracks, Spotify users can start a chat by tapping on another person’s profile picture, displayed in the top-left corner of the app. This enables them to begin a conversation even without sending a recommendation first.
Spotify will also suggest contacts to message based on interactions such as:
-
People a user has previously sent messages to
-
Friends with whom they have joined a Jam session
-
Collaborators on shared playlists
-
Family members or friends included in a Duo or Family plan
By integrating these suggestions, Spotify is making it easier for users to build stronger connections within its ecosystem.
Privacy and Safety Measures
With messaging comes the challenge of safety, and Spotify has assured users that conversations will be encrypted. However, the company did not confirm whether this will extend to end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
To maintain a safe environment, Spotify will employ proactive detection technology to scan messages and prevent the sharing of harmful or unlawful content. Any reported messages will undergo review by Spotify moderators to ensure compliance with community guidelines.
Social Engagement Beyond Spotify
While the new feature adds a social layer to the platform, Spotify will continue to support sharing across popular social media apps. This ensures users retain the flexibility to spread music and podcasts outside the Spotify ecosystem.
With direct messaging, Spotify appears to be positioning itself as more than just a streaming platform—transforming into a space where listening meets social interaction. This move could help the company keep users engaged and reduce reliance on external platforms for content sharing.
